For the majority of us, if we want to maintain a steady weight, we have to restrict what we eat and maybe listen to the experts; too many cakes and the weight piles on. Those experts have a field day telling us how to be healthy; the problem is, though, that they keep changing their minds!
These days, we're told that sweeteners are the real danger and yet are being added in excess to just about everything possible. We've seen photos of fizzy drinks and loads of sugar cubes next to them, representing their sugar content. But does that stop us drinking another Coke? We may choose a fruit juice in preference, but that's now shown to be nearly as bad.
Corn syrup is a relatively new sweetener, but horror stories of it's bad affects on the body are kept quiet after aggressive lobbying by companies with an interest. Thus, the experts say very little about this. In time, we'll wake up and realise why we're as unhealthy as we are, but in all probability not do much about it as we'll be addicted to the sweet food.
For years, fats have been decreed as bad for us but now they are possibly ok. Eggs, heavily promoted in the 50's as full of protein, were then seen as detrimental to cholesterol levels, but now are acceptable again in a balanced diet. Fruit and vegetables are heralded as the ideal food, and the more the better. Nevertheless, the experts, changing their minds about what is good or bad, confuse us. Who should we listen to if not them? Maybe we should go with our gut feeling, pun intended. Surely we know that a regular diet of beef burgers won't do us any good; we don't have to be told that.
We can listen to the experts, often arguing amongst themselves, about which are the best foods to eat, but then we should make our own decisions. However, it's clear that we're not going to be healthy by eating the wrong foods - once we acknowledge what they are; let's at least agree on that. All we need is a plateful of willpower.
